Only non-refunded contraceptive in France, the "third generation" pill, less balanced in estrogenic and progestogens, so better tolerated, will soon be exception to the rule. An agreement emerges in effect between the Government and the manufacturer of the medicinal products concerned, Schering Plough. In exchange for the reimbursement of its product, the US laboratory has agreed to lower the price of Varnoline continuous to the upgrade of the second-generation pills.
A prize manufacturer of 15 euros for a box of three booklets (i.e. three months of treatment), industrial accepted a division by 3, at approximately 5 euros. This amount are added the margins of the pharmacist and wholesaler and VAT, which should lead to a price between 7 and 8 euros. The result of the discussion is expected back.

The price decline was the requirement for a supported by Medicare. "From a médico-technique point of view, these pills are neither better nor worse than second generation.". "They are therefore not be more expensive", explains Claus Renaudin, President of the Economic Committee of health products (CEPS). This Committee is based on the opinion of the Commission on transparency of the high authority for health (HAS). However, it considers that "third-generation oral contraceptives do not provide for improvement of medical service to second-generation oral contraceptives", noted in its opinion dated May 27.
Schering Plough, Varnoline continuous, which is taken daily without the interruption of one week per month classic, is now a minor product in terms of turnover. With 517.000 euros last year, this drug is only a quarter of sales of Varnoline "three weeks" and cannot be compared with those of Cerazette (EUR 26.8 million) or Mercilon (3.5 million), two other pills of third generation of the group.
Task of oil
A refund of Varnoline continuous should boost sales in French pharmacies (only 35.224 boxes last year). In value, the turnover could remain limited declining prices given. But the product, put on the market almost fifteen years, is depreciated and suffered competition from generics. Biogaran sells the same association desogestrel-ethinyl estradiol and sold 1.2 million boxes in 2008, keeping turnover EUR 15.4 million. Varnoline continuous repayment should allow Schering Plough to win market share on its great competitor Bayer, the world leader in the sector.
Why Varnoline continuous "This decision is our involvement in long-term contraceptive products, more able to avoid omissions." "Our implant Implanon subdermal and our Nuvaring vaginal ring have the same benefits", details Brigitte Calles, responsible for access to the market for Schering Plough. The issue is of importance: among women using the pill, 21 say forget it at least once a month, according to a recent study by the Inpes. And 10 of the 210,000 Abortions performed each year in France would be due to an oversight of a pill.
The approach of Schering Plough should spreading. Codépharma, another French actor of the sector, reflects on a claim for its Tricilest pill, whose sales are in decline. Bayer could do the same with its newer drugs such as Jasmine, Jasminelle and Yaz, launched in January. But, also, everything is a matter of recognition of innovation by the public authorities and therefore price set.
