This is the first vegetable consumed in the world

First subsidiary established by the French seed abroad, the Iberian Peninsula is "a strategic market for the development of Vilmorin in field crop and vegetable seed." It has achieved a turnover of 43 billion in 2007-2008. Its competitors are all present, including the American Monsanto and Syngenta, world leader in Switzerland of the agrochemical market estimated at 500 million euros.

Despite the vividness of the competition, Vilmorin is among the first in various productions of seed of crops (corn, cereal straw, sunflower, barley) in Spain, a privileged field of experimentation because of the strong viral pressure. It has two research Elorz (Navarre) and Marchena stations near Seville, where he develops new seed for markets in southern Europe, preferred target of the group, included Turkey. Its research budget is of the order of EUR 100 million per year in Spain crops for a turnover of EUR 25.2 million which has doubled since 2000. The seeds of corn, including 8.6 of GMOs, represent one third of its activity with a market share of 13.

Researchers are working particularly to the development of specific varieties adapted to drought, heat and temperature variations, to expand its opportunities in the years to come. Through molecular marking, they earn valuable (from six to seven years) time on the classical selection, so reducing production costs and prospects of development of seed, provided that they satisfy the farmers of the "superiority of Vilmorin products." Less easy with GMOs, which use gain is easy to see and that operators are willing to pay twice more, said Manuel Rubio, CEO of Limagrain Iberica, the Spanish subsidiary of Vilmorin.

The seed of the Puy-de Dôme is 8 of European turnover in field crops in Spain, but 15 with vegetable seeds. A "strategic" by the leaders of the Group held sector. "The Spain has become the garden of the European Union," according to Emmanuel Rougier, operational General Manager of Vilmorin. It is both "a showcase where appeared many new varieties such as cherry tomatoes." Focused 80 in the Almeria region, "a White Sea of greenhouses", vegetable production is largely exported to other Member countries. A 10,000 euros per kilo of seeds "of a very high-tech", tomato concentrate only one third of the market value, before the pepper (a little less than 30) and melon (15). This is the first vegetable consumed in the world. The varieties are multiple and harvest spread throughout the year with sunshine 320 days long. Conditions which explain that the Spain be substituted over the last twenty years in traditional production areas as the region of Perpignan. In some cases, as for the melon, which produces a wide range of varieties, it has allowed to lengthen the timing of the offer and to improve the quality of the vegetable, more that it not substituted other producing countries.

The Spain is a market extremely struggled by seed, despite the risk of shortages and water quality. The sea has penetrated the upper layers of water, thus tripling the cost of the resource that must be dessaliniser. Number three behind Monsanto through its subsidiary Seminis and the Swiss Syngenta, Vilmorin is increased its sales of vegetable seeds from 10 to EUR 31 million over the 2007-2008 fiscal year, the aim being to gain share of market competition.

At the same time, Vilmorin develops on the Mediterranean basin to complement its portfolio of varieties and closer to its customers. The group is to open new branches in the Morocco with Vilmorin Atlas, in Algeria with Clause Maghreb and Turkey by buying its Anadolu Distributor. Unlike crops (corn, soya,...), genetically modified vegetables are not the seed program in these areas, but it should be able to launch a variety of cauliflower GMOs in India here in four years. An alternative to 30 pest control treatments performed on this vegetable in this area.
